Voice Input Overview

Voice Input lets you add groceries without touching the keyboard. Whether you're elbow-deep in meal prep or walking the aisles, you can dictate entire lists, let AI clean up formatting, and review before saving. Speech recognition uses Google Speech-to-Text, while Gemini AI handles categorization, pluralization, and brand detection.

How Voice Recognition Works

The pipeline is simple but powerful: ListAIse streams your audio to Google Speech-to-Text for a lightning-fast transcription. Gemini AI then parses that text into individual grocery items, applies categories, and detects quantities or descriptors.

  • Supports 40+ languages and regional accents.
  • Understands natural phrases such as "Add two cartons of almond milk and gluten-free bagels."
  • Automatically splits combos like "apples, oranges, and bananas" into separate items.

Latency expectations

Most sessions convert in under two seconds on broadband. If you have spotty service, ListAIse queues the audio and retries.

Set Up Voice Input

Voice Input works out of the box, but the first permission prompt appears the first time you tap the mic icon:

1

Allow microphone access

iOS/Android will prompt the first time. Choose "Allow while using the app" for the smoothest experience.

2

Pick your default language

ListAIse follows your device locale, but you can override it in Settings → Voice Input. Premium subscribers unlock multi-language sessions.

3

Choose output format

Decide if you want AI to auto-categorize items or leave them in an "Unsorted" bucket for manual cleanup. You can change this setting per session.

Add Items with Your Voice

Once permissions are set, adding items is a breeze:

1

Open any list and tap the mic

Hold the mic button to record. Release when you're done speaking.

2

Speak naturally

ListAIse understands phrases like "Add oat milk, four avocados, and a dozen eggs to my Weekend Brunch list."

3

Review and confirm

Transcriptions appear in preview. Edit, delete, or split items, then tap Add to list.

Use natural grouping

Instead of pausing after each item, dictate small groups. AI handles separation and categorization for you, saving time.

Editing Transcriptions

If something looks off, tap any entry in the preview panel to edit:

  • Correct typos, swap categories, or change quantities before saving.
  • Split combined items—ListAIse recognizes commas, "and," or "plus" to identify breaks.
  • Voice corrections are supported. Say "Scratch that" to remove the last snippet (English only for now).

Usage & Limits

Voice Input usage is measured in minutes of transcription time. Free accounts include 10 minutes/month; Premium bumps this to 50 minutes.

Where to check usage

Visit Settings → Voice Input to see minutes remaining, reset date, and upgrade options. You'll also see the average accuracy for the current month.

Tips for Best Accuracy

Speak with context

Include quantities, sizes, and brands ("two cartons of Oatly oat milk") so ListAIse captures what matters.

Mind background noise

Kitchens and stores can get loud. Cup the mic or move to a quieter spot for critical lists. Noise-cancelling headphones help too.

  • Pause briefly between items so AI knows where to split.
  • Use "comma" or "and" to signal separation when listing rapid-fire items.
  • Slow down for specialty ingredients (e.g., "harissa paste") to boost accuracy.

Troubleshooting

Problems happen—here are quick fixes:

  • No audio detected: Re-open microphone permissions in device settings. Close and relaunch ListAIse afterward.
  • Slow transcription: Switch to Wi-Fi or wait a beat. We queue the request so you won't lose audio.
  • Items not splitting: Add small pauses or verbal separators ("comma," "period," "next item"). Gemini uses these cues to split phrases.

Still stuck?

Drop by the Troubleshooting guide for device-specific fixes or open a support ticket from within the app.

Privacy & Data

Voice snippets are encrypted end-to-end and never stored long-term. Google processes the audio to return a transcription, then ListAIse deletes the original recording. Only the text you approve lives with your list.

  • Audio is streamed securely over HTTPS and discarded immediately after transcription.
  • We log anonymized metrics (success vs failure) to improve accuracy—no grocery content is used for training.
  • Disable voice analytics any time in Settings → Privacy.

FAQ

Can I add items to specific lists by voice?

Yes. Start by opening the list you want or say "Add this to Costco" and we'll switch contexts automatically.

Does it work offline?

Voice recognition requires connectivity. If you start offline, we queue the audio and sync when you reconnect (Premium only). For instant results, stay online.

Which languages are supported?

Google Speech-to-Text powers the language list. Check their latest language matrix —ListAIse automatically inherits new additions.
