Voice Input Overview

Voice Input lets you add groceries without typing each item. Open a list, record a natural phrase, and let ListAIse turn the transcription into item names, quantities, and categories. Nothing is added until you review the detected set and confirm it.

How Voice Recognition Works

ListAIse first transcribes the recording, then sends the text through the selected AI mode to produce structured grocery items. The Voice Studio lets you switch between Cloud and an installed Local model.

Use automatic language detection or choose from ten explicit regional language options.
Understands natural phrases such as "Add two cartons of almond milk and gluten-free bagels."
Parses grouped phrases into separate items with quantities and suggested categories.

Cloud and Local modes

Cloud mode needs a connection. Local mode requires a downloaded on-device model and does not consume cloud voice minutes.

Set Up Voice Input

Voice Input works out of the box, but the first permission prompt appears the first time you tap the mic icon:

Allow microphone access

iOS or Android prompts the first time you start recording. Allow access while using ListAIse.

Choose a recognition language

Automatic detection follows your device language. You can select a supported regional locale in Settings → Voice Input.

Choose an AI mode

Use the Cloud or Local segment in Voice Studio. Local becomes available after its on-device model is installed.

Add items with your voice

Once permissions are set, use these steps to add items:

Open any list and tap the mic

Tap the microphone once to begin recording. Tap the stop button when you're done speaking.

Speak naturally

ListAIse understands phrases like "Add oat milk, four avocados, and a dozen eggs."

Review and confirm

Select or deselect items, drag to reorder them, or swipe away an unwanted row. Then tap Add to Grocery List.

Use natural grouping

Instead of pausing after each item, dictate small groups. AI separates the phrase into items and suggests categories.

Voice Commands for Meal Plans

When adding items to a meal plan grocery list, voice input understands meal context. You can assign items directly to specific days and meal slots just by speaking naturally.

Say "Add eggs to Monday breakfast" and the item is assigned to Monday's breakfast slot automatically.
Supports all days (Monday through Sunday) and meal slots (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).
If no day or meal slot is detected, the item remains a normal unassigned grocery item.
On a regular list, voice input works without meal-plan assignments.

Natural patterns

Try phrases like "butter for Tuesday lunch" or "add rice to Wednesday dinner." The day and meal slot are extracted automatically so you can keep your hands free while planning.

Reviewing Detected Items

The review tray is designed for confirming the parsed result before it reaches your list:

Tap a row to include or exclude it from the set that will be added.
Drag rows into the order you want, or swipe away an item you do not need.
Use the reset control if you want to discard the result and record again.

Usage & Limits

Voice Input usage is measured in minutes of transcription time. Free accounts include 5 minutes to try cloud voice input. Premium bypasses the free-tier cloud voice minute limit while your subscription is active. An installed Local model provides on-device transcription without consuming cloud voice minutes.

Where to check usage

The Cloud segment in Voice Studio shows the remaining cloud minutes. The Local segment shows whether an on-device model is installed and ready.

Tips for Best Accuracy

Speak with context

Include quantities, sizes, and brands ("two cartons of Oatly oat milk") so ListAIse captures what matters.

Mind background noise

Kitchens and stores can get loud. Cup the mic or move to a quieter spot for critical lists. Noise-cancelling headphones help too.

Pause briefly between items so AI knows where to split.
Use "comma" or "and" to signal separation when listing rapid-fire items.
Slow down for specialty ingredients such as "harissa paste" to make them easier to recognize.

Troubleshooting

Try these checks when voice input does not work as expected:

No audio detected: Re-open microphone permissions in device settings. Close and relaunch ListAIse afterward.
Slow transcription: Check your connection in Cloud mode, or confirm the Local model is installed before switching modes.
Items not splitting: Add small pauses or verbal separators ("comma," "period," "next item"). Our AI uses these cues to split phrases.

Privacy & Data

ListAIse records to a temporary audio file while processing. Cloud mode sends that file to the configured transcription service; Local mode uses the installed on-device model. The temporary file is deleted after normal processing.

Premium cloud sessions interrupted by a network failure can be kept in an offline queue until a retry succeeds.
The parsed items stay in a review tray until you choose what to add.
Only the item set you confirm is added to the open grocery list.

Can I add items to specific lists by voice?

Yes. Open the target list first, then launch Voice Input from that list.

Does it work offline?

Cloud mode requires connectivity. Premium cloud sessions can queue a recording after a network failure. Local mode can transcribe on-device after its model is downloaded.
