Meal Planning

Plan your weekly meals with ListAIse's intuitive calendar interface. Schedule breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, then auto-generate your grocery list with one tap.

Introduction to Meal Planning

Meal planning in ListAIse helps you organize your weekly meals, reduce food waste, and simplify grocery shopping. Instead of deciding what to cook each day, plan ahead and let ListAIse automatically create your shopping list from your meal plans.

Save Time

Plan once for the entire week. No more daily decisions about what to cook or last-minute grocery runs.

Reduce Waste

Buy exactly what you need. Mark leftovers to use existing ingredients and minimize food waste.

Creating Your First Meal Plan

Getting started with meal planning is simple. The weekly calendar interface shows your week at a glance, with a compact day selector strip at the top and full-width meal slot cards for each day.

1

Open Meal Planning

Tap the calendar icon in the bottom navigation bar to access the Meal Planning screen.
2

Navigate to Your Week

Use the week navigator at the top to browse between previous, current, and upcoming weeks. The compact 7-day selector strip lets you quickly jump to any day.
3

Select a Day

Tap any day in the selector strip to see the daily detail view with Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner meal slot cards. You can also swipe horizontally to move between days.
4

Add Your First Meal

Tap the + button on any meal slot (Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner) to add a meal. Choose a recipe from your library or create a quick meal.

Adding Meals to the Calendar

There are multiple ways to add meals to your calendar. Choose recipes from your library, browse smart suggestions, or create quick meals with custom ingredients.

Methods for Adding Meals

From Recipe Library

Select from recipes you've already imported. Ingredients will automatically be included when generating your grocery list, scaled to your chosen serving size.

Perfect for favorite recipes you cook regularly

Smart Recipe Suggestions

Browse intelligent recipe suggestions based on your cooking history. ListAIse surfaces highly rated recipes (4+ stars), forgotten favorites you haven't cooked in 30+ days, quick recipes under 30 minutes, recently added recipes, and more.

Filter by difficulty, prep time, or frequency — great when you need inspiration

Quick Meal

Create a quick meal entry with a name, optional notes, and an optional ingredients list (each with name, quantity, and unit). Perfect for simple meals or when you don't have a full recipe saved.

Example: "Grilled cheese" with ingredients like "2 slices bread, 1 slice cheddar"

Serving Size

Each meal has an adjustable serving size (default: 1). When you generate a grocery list, ingredient quantities are automatically multiplied by the serving count.

Meal Queue

The Meal Queue is a staging area where you can collect recipes before assigning them to specific days and meal slots. Think of it as your "cooking shortlist" for the week.

How the Meal Queue Works

  • Add recipes to your queue from the recipe library at any time
  • Sort queued recipes by rating, prep time, or recently added
  • Assign queued meals to specific days and slots when you're ready to plan
  • Each queued item shows cached prep time and rating for quick decisions

Plan as You Go

Found a great recipe during the week? Add it to your queue immediately. When Sunday comes, you'll have a curated list of meals ready to assign to your weekly plan.

Serving Size Adjustments

Every planned meal has an adjustable serving size that defaults to 1. When you change the serving count, ingredient quantities are automatically scaled during grocery list generation.

Automatic Scaling

Set 4 servings for a dinner recipe and all ingredient quantities are multiplied by 4 in your grocery list.

Smart Consolidation

If two meals use the same ingredient, quantities are combined into a single list entry with the total amount you need.

Auto-Generate Grocery List

The most powerful feature of meal planning is automatic grocery list generation. Once your week is planned, ListAIse extracts all ingredients from your recipe-based meals and creates a meal-aware shopping list.

1

Plan Your Week

Add meals for each day. You can plan as few or as many meals as you want. Quick meals without ingredients are skipped during generation.
2

Tap Generate List

Press the "Generate Grocery List" button at the bottom of the meal planning screen. ListAIse extracts ingredients from each recipe at the specified serving size.
3

Review & Customize

ListAIse shows all extracted ingredients with smart consolidation — duplicate ingredients are combined into a single entry with the total quantity. Remove items you already have, adjust quantities, or add extras.
4

Shop with Meal Context

Your generated list tracks which items belong to which meals. Switch between "By Category" and "By Meal" sort views while shopping.

Smart Ingredient Consolidation

ListAIse intelligently combines duplicate ingredients across all your meals. If Monday's dinner and Wednesday's lunch both call for onions, you'll see a single entry with the combined quantity — while still tracking which meals need them.

Meal-Aware Shopping Lists

Shopping lists generated from meal plans are special — every item knows which meals it belongs to, giving you two powerful ways to shop.

By Category View

Items organized by store sections (produce, dairy, etc.) — just like a regular shopping list. Efficient for navigating the store aisle by aisle.

By Meal View

Items grouped by day (Monday → Sunday) with sub-headers for each meal slot (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner). See exactly what you need for each meal at a glance.

Key Features

  • Cross-view check-offs: Checking an item in one view checks it everywhere
  • Per-meal deletion: Remove an item from a specific meal without affecting other meals that use it
  • Inline meal assignment: When adding new items, use the meal slot picker chip to assign them to a specific day and meal
  • Voice with meal context: Say "add eggs to Monday breakfast" and the item is assigned automatically

Shared Meal Lists

When you share a meal plan list with family members, they see the same "By Meal" view and sort options. Notifications include meal context — e.g., "Alex added Butter to Tuesday Lunch."

Tips & Best Practices

Plan on the Weekend

Take 15 minutes on Sunday to plan your entire week. This saves hours of daily decision-making and ensures you shop efficiently.

Use Batch Cooking

Plan a big meal on Sunday and mark Monday's lunch as leftovers. This maximizes your cooking effort and reduces weekday stress.

Theme Your Days

Assign themes like "Meatless Monday" or "Taco Tuesday" to simplify planning and add variety to your meals.

Check Before Generating

Before generating your grocery list, quickly review your pantry. You can remove items you already have when reviewing the generated list.

Involve the Family

Share your meal plan with family members. Everyone can see what's for dinner and contribute meal ideas.
