Open the Assistant

The Assistant helps you work out what to buy for the list you have open. It is available on Free and Premium, with usage limits, and requires an internet connection and edit access to the list.

1

Open a grocery list

Open the list you want to fill, expand its add-action menu, and choose Assistant.
2

Ask for items or ideas

Type a message such as “Add milk, eggs and bread,” “What can I use instead of butter?” or “Plan a simple pasta dinner.” You can also use the microphone to dictate a message; allow microphone access when asked and review the text before sending.
3

Read the reply

Ask a follow-up if you want to change the suggestion. Meal ideas help you decide what to buy; use the meal planner to schedule meals on the calendar.

Review and add items

A reply may include a Suggested items card. Nothing from that card is added until you approve it.

  1. Read the item names, quantities, and units. Ask a follow-up if the suggestion needs changing.
  2. Deselect anything you do not want.
  3. Check the destination list. You can choose another list you have permission to edit.
  4. Tap Add to list to add the selected items, or dismiss the suggestion.

Undo an accidental add

When you add to the list you currently have open, use Undo in the success message while it is visible. This shortcut is not offered for additions to a different list; open that list to remove unwanted items.

If you leave with an unreviewed suggestion, the app warns that its items have not been added. If only some items could be added, check the destination list before trying again.

Cloud processing and usage limits

The Assistant uses Google Gemini in the cloud, including when your usual AI provider is On-Device. Your message and item names are sent for processing. If you selected On-Device AI, the app asks for cloud consent for the session before sending a request. You can cancel.

Free and Premium both have hourly and daily Assistant limits; Premium has a higher allowance. Other cloud AI use can also affect your available allowance. Near the limit, the Assistant shows how many messages remain and whether the hourly or daily limit applies. Limits reset on UTC boundaries, which may differ from your local midnight.

See On-device AI for supported local tasks and how cloud consent works.

Fix a problem

  • Offline: reconnect to send messages. You can continue editing available grocery lists manually while offline.
  • View-only access: ask the list owner for edit access or open a list you can edit.
  • Could not reach the Assistant: check your connection, then use Retry for the failed message.
  • Usage limit reached: wait for the indicated hourly or daily allowance to reset. Premium raises limits but does not remove them.
  • Wrong suggestion: leave unwanted rows unchecked, dismiss the card, or ask a more specific follow-up.

For recipe-specific swaps, see servings and ingredient substitutions. For ongoing errors, use the troubleshooting guide.
