What is AI Recipe Import?

AI Recipe Import is ListAIse's most powerful feature that eliminates the tedious task of manually copying ingredients from recipes. Whether you're planning a dinner party, meal prepping for the week, or trying a new recipe from your favorite food blog, ListAIse can convert it to a grocery list instantly.

Using Google's advanced Gemini AI technology, ListAIse can:

  • Parse ingredients from recipe URLs (works with 1000+ cooking websites)
  • Extract ingredients from plain text or pasted recipes
  • Analyze recipe images to identify ingredients
  • Normalize quantities and units automatically
  • Intelligently categorize each ingredient
  • Adjust servings and recalculate quantities
  • Combine multiple recipes into one optimized list

Supported Recipe Sources

ListAIse works with virtually any recipe source. Here are the most popular:

🌐 Recipe Websites

  • • AllRecipes, Food Network, Bon Appétit
  • • NYT Cooking, Serious Eats, Epicurious
  • • Tasty, Delish, Simply Recipes
  • • Personal food blogs and websites
  • • International cooking sites

📱 Other Sources

  • • Social media posts (Instagram, Pinterest)
  • • Recipe PDFs and documents
  • • Cookbook photos
  • • Handwritten recipe cards
  • • Text messages and emails

Best Practices for Accuracy

For best results:

  • Use recipe URLs when possible (most accurate)
  • Ensure text is clearly formatted with ingredients separated
  • For images, make sure text is legible and well-lit
  • Include measurement units in your recipe source

How to Import from Recipe URL

This is the fastest and most accurate method for importing recipes. Most recipe websites are supported.

1

Navigate to Recipe Import

There are two ways to access recipe import:

  • Option A: Tap the floating action button (FAB) → Select "Import Recipe"
  • Option B: Go to Recipe Library tab → Tap "Import from URL"

2

Paste Recipe URL

  1. Find the recipe you want on any cooking website
  2. Copy the full URL from your browser (e.g., https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/...)
  3. Return to ListAIse and paste the URL in the input field
  4. Tap "Import"

Pro Tip: Share Directly to ListAIse

On mobile, use your device's share menu! While viewing a recipe in your browser or recipe app, tap the share button and select "ListAIse" to import directly without copying.

3

AI Processes the Recipe

ListAIse's AI will analyze the recipe page and extract:

  • Recipe title and metadata
  • All ingredients with quantities and units
  • Servings information
  • Optional: Cooking instructions and notes

This usually takes 2-5 seconds. You'll see a loading indicator with a fun cooking-related animation.

Review Extracted Ingredients

Once processed, you'll see a review screen with all extracted ingredients:

  • Each ingredient is listed with name, quantity, and unit
  • AI has automatically categorized each item (produce, dairy, meat, etc.)
  • You can edit any ingredient by tapping on it
  • Remove unwanted items (like optional garnishes)
  • Add items that might have been missed

Always Review Before Adding

While our AI is highly accurate (95%+ accuracy rate), always review the extracted ingredients. Occasionally, the AI might misinterpret unconventional recipe formats or specialized ingredients.

Select Target List & Adjust Servings

  1. Choose which grocery list to add ingredients to (or create a new one)
  2. Optional: Adjust the number of servings if you're cooking for more/fewer people than the original recipe
  3. ListAIse will automatically recalculate all quantities based on your serving size

Servings Math Made Easy

Planning to double a recipe for a party? Just change servings from 4 to 8, and ListAIse automatically doubles all quantities. No manual calculations needed!

6

Confirm and Add to List

Tap "Add to List" and all ingredients will be added to your chosen grocery list with:

  • ✅ Proper categorization for efficient shopping
  • ✅ Consolidated quantities (if items already exist on your list)
  • ✅ Recipe metadata (so you know which recipe each ingredient is for)
  • ✅ Serving size information

Combining Multiple Recipes

Planning a full dinner party or weekly meal prep? ListAIse can combine ingredients from multiple recipes into one optimized shopping list.

How It Works:

  1. Import your first recipe following the steps above
  2. Import additional recipes to the same grocery list
  3. ListAIse automatically consolidates duplicate ingredients
  4. Quantities are combined intelligently (e.g., "2 cups milk" + "1 cup milk" = "3 cups milk")
  5. Each item shows which recipes it's used in

Smart Consolidation

ListAIse is smart about combining ingredients. If you need "whole milk" for one recipe and "2% milk" for another, they'll remain separate items. But if both recipes call for "milk" or "whole milk", quantities will be combined automatically.

Example: Weekly Meal Prep

Import these 5 recipes for a week of meals:

  • • Monday: Chicken Stir Fry
  • • Tuesday: Spaghetti Carbonara
  • • Wednesday: Greek Salad with Grilled Chicken
  • • Thursday: Beef Tacos
  • • Friday: Homemade Pizza

Result: One optimized grocery list with consolidated ingredients, organized by category, ready for a single shopping trip!

ListAIse includes a curated recipe library with hundreds of popular recipes across various cuisines and dietary preferences.

Tips for Best Results

✅ DO:

  • • Use recipe URLs when possible (highest accuracy)
  • • Review ingredients before adding to your list
  • • Adjust servings to match your needs
  • • Combine multiple recipes for weekly meal prep
  • • Remove optional ingredients you won't use
  • • Check ingredient categories and adjust if needed

❌ AVOID:

  • • Importing recipes without ingredient lists
  • • Pasting only cooking instructions (no ingredients)
  • • Using extremely low-quality or blurry images
  • • Importing recipes in unsupported languages
  • • Expecting AI to interpret vague descriptions

Common Issues & Solutions

❓ Recipe import failed or returned no ingredients

Possible causes and solutions:

  • Recipe URL is behind a paywall → Try copying the recipe text instead
  • Website blocks automated access → Use text/image import method
  • Recipe has no ingredients section → Check the recipe source is complete
  • Poor internet connection → Wait and try again with stable connection

❓ AI extracted wrong quantities or ingredients

The AI has 95%+ accuracy but isn't perfect. Simply edit the ingredients on the review screen before adding to your list. You can modify quantities, units, names, and categories. Report persistent issues via Settings → Send Feedback to help improve the AI.

❓ Servings adjustment calculated wrong amounts

Check that the original recipe's servings value was detected correctly. If it shows "0 servings" or an incorrect number, manually correct it before adjusting. Some recipes have non-standard serving descriptions that AI might misinterpret.

❓ I've reached my monthly import limit

Limits reset on the 1st of each month. In the meantime, you can still browse the Recipe Library and manually add ingredients. Consider planning your recipe imports strategically—combine multiple recipes into one shopping trip to maximize your imports.
