What is Receipt Scanning?

Receipt Scanning uses the selected AI provider to turn receipt input into structured list items. It can detect names, quantities, categories, and prices, then holds the results in a review card until you choose what to add.

Why Use Receipt Scanning?

Rebuild a Regular Shop

Use a previous receipt as a starting point, then keep only the products you need this time.

Capture Item Prices

When a price is detected, it travels with that item into the list after you approve it.

Match the Receipt Type

Choose Grocery, Medicine, Household, or Other for a receipt, or Written list or screenshot for an existing shopping list.

Stay in Control

Deselect, remove, or reorder detected products before adding the final set to your list.

Free Trial & Premium Access

Free users can try Receipt Scanning with 5 scans. Premium users bypass free-tier scan limits while their subscription is active.

How AI Extraction Works

Receipt scanning follows the same provider choice shown in the app: use Cloud AI with your available scan quota, or an installed Local model. The selected model turns the input into structured items for review.

The Shipped Scanner Flow

  1. 1
    Choose an Input

Take a photo, select an existing image, or paste receipt text directly.

  2. 2
    Choose the AI Provider

Keep Cloud selected or switch to Local after the on-device model is installed.

  3. 3
    Set the Receipt Type

Choose Grocery, Medicine, Household, or Other for receipts. Choose Written list or screenshot to import a shopping list.

  4. 4
    Extract Structured Items

The selected AI returns list-ready names, quantities, categories, and prices when available.

  5. 5
    Review and Add

Select the final products, reorder or remove them, and add the confirmed set to the active list.

Scanning Your First Receipt

Follow this step-by-step guide to scan your first grocery receipt and add items to your list.

1

Open Receipt Scanner

Open the receipt scanner from the grocery list you want to fill. The scanner shows the active AI provider and remaining Cloud scans before you begin.
2

Choose Cloud or Local AI

Keep Cloud selected, or switch to Local after downloading the on-device model from settings.
3

Choose the Receipt Input

Choose your scanning method:
  • Tap capture button to take a new photo with your camera
  • Tap gallery icon to select an existing receipt photo from your device
  • Tap Paste Text to analyze receipt text already on your clipboard
4

Choose a Receipt Type

Select Grocery, Medicine, Household, or Other for a receipt. For a shopping note, choose Written list or screenshot.
5

Wait for Processing

The processing card stays visible while the selected AI identifies items and prices.
6

Review and Add

Review the detected items, deselect or remove anything you do not want, reorder when helpful, then tap Add to Grocery List with the selected count.

Scan before the receipt fades

Scan receipts soon after shopping while the paper is still crisp and the ink is fresh. Faded or wrinkled receipts may have lower accuracy.

Import a written list or screenshot

Use the scanner to bring a handwritten shopping list, a note, or a screenshot into the grocery list you have open.

  1. Open the scanner from your grocery list and check the Cloud or Local provider selection.
  2. Take a clear photo of the written list, or choose the screenshot from your gallery.
  3. Select Written list or screenshot in the scan-type chooser.
  4. Review the extracted names and quantities, deselect unwanted rows, and add the selected items.

Shopping items, not receipt prices

Written-list mode is intended to read active shopping items and ignore crossed-out or checked-off entries, headings, prices, and totals. An item without a written quantity defaults to one. Check the results before adding, especially when handwriting or check marks are unclear.

This mode uses the same provider selection and scan access rules as the scanner. It does not add items automatically or introduce a separate free scan allowance.

Automatic Price Detection

The selected AI can return a price alongside an item name, quantity, unit, and category. Prices appear in your chosen app currency on the review card before anything is added to the list.

How Price Detection Works

  • Structured extraction: the model returns a price when it can associate one with a detected item
  • Currency-aware display: the review card formats detected values with your current ListAIse currency preference
  • Review first: read each quantity and price together before keeping the item
  • Correct later: if a value is wrong or missing, remove the result or update the item from the list after adding it

What the Scanner Preserves

Detected Price

Approved items keep the price extracted from the receipt

Quantity and Unit

Quantities and units remain visible beside the item during review

Category

Detected categories travel with approved list items

Selection

Only checked items are added when you confirm the review

Tips for Clear Receipt Photos

Receipt quality affects AI extraction. Follow these best practices for a clearer input:

Do's

  • Use natural lighting or bright room lights, avoiding shadows
  • Flatten the receipt on a contrasting surface (dark receipt on light surface)
  • Center the entire receipt in frame with all four corners visible
  • Hold camera parallel to the receipt (directly overhead, not angled)
  • Scan fresh receipts when ink is still dark and paper is crisp
  • Clean camera lens if photos appear blurry

Don'ts

  • Avoid direct flash which creates glare on thermal paper
  • Don't photograph wrinkled receipts without smoothing them first
  • Avoid cluttered backgrounds with busy patterns or text
  • Don't crop too tightly. Include some border space around the receipt.
  • Avoid low resolution photos (use main camera, not selfie camera)
  • Don't scan heavily faded receipts (thermal ink fades over time)

Reviewing Scanned Items

After processing, ListAIse presents extracted items in a selection-focused review card. Confirm the names, quantities, categories, and prices before adding the final set to your list.

Review Screen Features

Item List

All detected items start selected. Tap the check control to include or exclude each one.

Reorder

Drag items into the order you want before adding them.

Remove

Swipe an incorrect result away; the list supports undo for accidental removal.

Scan Again

Use the refresh action to discard this review and start another scan.

Add Selected Items

The final button shows how many checked products will be added to the active list.

Review Every Scan

The scanner does not assign confidence badges. Read every detected name, quantity, and price, then deselect or remove anything that does not match the receipt.

Common Use Cases

Receipt scanning turns receipt content into a useful starting point for the list you already have open.

Rebuild Weekly Staples

Scan last week's receipt to recreate your regular grocery list and avoid starting from scratch each time.

Review: Deselect products you still have at home.

Import a Digital Receipt

Save an emailed receipt as an image and choose it from the gallery, or paste copied receipt text without opening the camera.

Choice: Camera, Gallery, and Paste Text share the same review flow.

Scan More Than Groceries

Choose Medicine, Household, or Other when the receipt does not fit the Grocery category.

Context: The receipt type guides AI extraction.

Keep Only What You Need

Use an old event or holiday receipt as a starting point, then remove or deselect products that do not belong in the new plan.

Control: Nothing reaches the list until you press the final add button.

Free Trial & Premium Access

Receipt scanning includes a small free trial so you can test AI extraction before upgrading. Premium bypasses free-tier cloud scan limits while your subscription is active.

Tracking Free Usage

The Cloud segment at the top of the scanner shows the current number of scans remaining. The Local segment also shows whether the on-device model is installed or still needs setup.

When Free Scans Run Out

If you reach the free Cloud scan limit, you can keep adding and editing items manually or upgrade to Premium to bypass the free-tier limit.

Troubleshooting Scan Errors

Occasionally, receipt scanning may encounter issues. Here are common problems and solutions:

Camera or Photo Access Is Blocked

Cause: ListAIse does not have permission to open the camera or photo library.

Solution: Allow access when prompted. If permission was permanently denied, open the device app settings and enable it there.

No Cloud Scans Remaining

Cause: The Cloud scan counter has reached zero.

Solution: Add items manually, install and select the Local model when available, or upgrade for the Premium Cloud benefit.

No Useful Items Were Extracted

Cause: The image may be blurry, dark, tightly cropped, or difficult for the selected model to interpret.

Solution: Retake the receipt in even light, choose a clearer gallery image, paste the receipt text, or use the refresh action and try again.

Some Names or Prices Are Wrong

Cause: The model could not confidently associate every value with the right product.

Solution: Deselect or swipe away incorrect results. After adding the approved set, make detailed name or price corrections from the list item editor.

If processing fails, copy the exact error shown in the scanner when contacting support. Do not send a receipt image if it contains information you do not want to share.

Privacy & Data Handling

Processing depends on the provider selected at the top of the scanner. Review that choice before submitting a receipt that may contain personal information.

Cloud AI

Camera or gallery input is sent through ListAIse's Cloud AI path when Cloud is selected. The remaining-scan counter is shown directly in the provider switcher.

Local AI

When an on-device model is installed and Local is selected, inference runs on the device. If local image processing runs out of memory, the app asks before using a Cloud fallback.

Temporary Image

The scanner keeps the selected image only for the active scan and removes the temporary local file when the scanner resets or is disposed.

Review Before Saving

Extracted products are not added automatically. Only the items you leave selected and confirm are sent to the active grocery list.

For complete details, review our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
